Sacred Union

I attended an online seminar a few weeks ago on Sacred Union, and have found myself thinking about it ever since. ..only to realize it’s actually been on my 🫀and 🧠 for a few months now 🙃

I looked back at some notes I’d typed into my very sophisticated Notepad app following a plant medicine experience in the fall:

“All the separation, division, and disharmony collapses in service to love. I willingly lay it at the altar.”

I’ve been particularly interested in the differences between the way I would’ve previously described relationships and what is referred to as Sacred Union.

Since I am not currently partnered, I have the privilege of exploring these ideas from a place of total neutrality; which I feel is necessary if we hope to catch even a glimpse of the truth (unbiased on the subject matter, not necessarily single).

To be clear, neither one is right or wrong. I believe they both have their place in the world and in our lives.

For most of my 30’s, I would’ve said relationships are for the personal growth and evolution of each person. We attract what we need in order to SEE different sides of ourselves, heal, and become more integrated and whole. The emphasis is on the individual.

If I put on my therapist hat, Id say this is actually a really healthy goal for people in their 30’s; especially considering no one seems to know what they’re doing at all up until that point anyways 🤷‍♀️

I still believe this type of relationship is helpful and necessary and usually part of most peoples’ journey.. ..I would also say those called to the Sacred Union path are those that have done the work to heal fragmentation and integrate masculine/feminine energies within themselves first.

I’m noticing this is somewhat taking the form of Twin Flame vrs Soulmate bonds, which is interesting, but wasn’t my original intent, which makes it even more interesting. ..

A sidenote on that:
I don’t subscribe to the belief that a Twin Flame is the other half of our soul. I believe our souls are complete. When I use the term “Twin Flame,” I’m referring to a relationship where there is a lot of mirroring and both people are highly triggered by the other. It unearths core wounds and can act as a portal to each persons’ deepest healing if we choose into it.

There’s an intensity to the Twin Flame dynamic, and it’s usually not sustainable unless both people are willing to do their own healing work on the material that surfaces. ..if this is the case, then yes a Twin Flame connection can become a Soulmate (Sacred Union) connection.

Now, more about Soulmates/Sacred Union:
Sacred Union is in service to Love, or the Devine, as opposed to the self or individual.

I want to be really clear in saying this is not a moral judgment, or associated with virtue. It is merely a different focus and intention. Not everyone will feel called to it or have the capacity for this type of bond. This is also not dependent upon, or related to legal marriage status, or affiliated with a specific spiritual framework, church denomination etc.

This probably goes without saying, but people can be married and not be in a Soulmate/Sacred Union relationship. In fact I would say most present day marriages do not take this form.

Once again, no judgement. ..relationships are functional- especially when we look at the way our society is structured and the cultural programs we’ve all been subjected to, and have consciously or unconsciously perpetuated.

Back to Sacred Union:
A commitment is made to prioritize the Union. Therefore any material that surfaces is explored and healed. In my understanding, the idea is that not only can things surface- they will absolutely surface, and that’s the whole point.

The commitment is to heal and work through anything that creates a barrier to love. ..the imagery I get is of a fire burning off all the trama, the drama, the superficiality, the shadow projections, etc.

Each partner commits to forgo anything that would interfere with the union- to the point of painfulness! Lol

Ironically I do not picture a fire when discussing Twin Flame dynamic. Perhaps it’s because each person didn’t necessarily sign up to walk through the flames- atleast not consciously.

They were usually just trying to go on a casual date, then ended up in the whirlwind hurricane/tornado lol. ..if i had to choose imagery for Twin Flames it would be a mirror, simply because both people usually catch a glimpse of themselves in the other, then run away immediately 😮🤷‍♀️

They usually aren’t trying to stick around for the burning part, but they may experience the embers smoldering for a time following the dispersion as they try to make sense of what just happened.

Quick note: of course there are a million different types of relationships, and many (if not most) of them aren’t as energetically charged as the ones I’m describing here. These are just two of the ones that tend to get a lot of press coverage in spiritual communities.

I’ve been doing an interesting little dance with this social media post and blog entry: pulling them in and out of archives/drafts over the past few days.

While I have tweaked them here and there, I just realized my reluctance to post stems primarily from a feeling of inadequacy and perhaps a version of imposter syndrome.

After all, who am I to speak on these matters?

I ultimately decided to post them anyway because I refuse to perpetuate the belief that I have to earn my right to speak. It is that ideaology that results in women voluntarily climbing back up on the stake with the match in hand 🔥.. .no thank you.

So, just for today, I will humbly share my thoughts on Sacred Union from a place of “hey look, this is a thing.” 🤷

  1. This entry is just a quick overview of what I’ve learned over the past few years. It is by no means exhaustive. There are all kinds of resources available for those who feel called to learn more.
